Improving our infrastructure for a release

It will be release time soonish – the current plan is to have 0.3 out in January or February though if we are lucky we might get it out at the end of this month. This release will probably include GNU bash, a Cairo demo, and will hopefully self host.

As some of you may remember, Exclaim started life on Launchpad. We later moved off Launchpad onto our own server from the lovely Slicehost, and eventually it appeared that the migration was all done. However, one crucial component is still missing – the downloads system.

Originally the plan was to have a SwishCMS module to manage these downloads, however due to lack of time, this never got wrote. It also seems unlikely that it will be done in time for the 0.3 release.

Therefore we will just have to provide a download link for now. Thankfully another Slicehost user says we can use his server as a mirror, and so an alternative mirror will be available, but a more permanent solution is needed.

This module will be written, and we will need mirrors. Watch this space!

About the new Exclaim site

The white top-level tabs didn’t last long – did they

This update has 2 focuses, one to replace some components of the site with Trac (which makes filing bugs and viewing the source really easy and nice to do), and to make the website less commercial (we are no way ready to put it in boxes at your local computer store yet!)

As part of this, I redesigned the tabs again so they are less buggy, don’t use images containing the icons (as they were a nasty hack, now I use the original icon from the Tango SVN), and so they look more attractive. Now everything in the site fits on!

Planet is finally getting a bit more love now too, since managing all the components in the Developer Site was just too time confusing. The whole two-site idea has gone out the window too, as that was just confusing. In the site-selector’s place is a search box which lets you search whatever section of the site your on. And this time, they are on almost every page!

The homepage got cleaned up a bit too, the news articles look less ugly now.

Unfortunately not everything got an improvement. Since Trac came in, Flyspray, WebSVN and DokuWiki got the axe, but they were a pest to maintain, and were starting to look really ugly. The new components have had a quality job done on the look and feel.

The pastebin is gone as really there are other sites like Slexy and pastebin.ca, so hopefully that won’t be missed. The code is still in SVN if anyone wants it though.

Finally I think the site will be left like this for a while now. Currently I am waiting for FluxBB 1.3 to come out, and then it will be another fun job theming it again, though at least mods will be easier to maintain. We are also planning a build server some point soon, which will integrate into the site.

Have a great December everyone!

Well, I rewrote the disgustingly hackish VFS code and made it nicer, and along with it came a nice new RAM-based filesystem. Plus, I added mkdir, and uname (uname actually came quite a while ago, but oh well). There’s also a new cross compiler for the userspace, as shown in the uname output

Wow, a lot has happened in Exclaim since I last posted about it :). The above screenshot shows the latest progress, as of today. I decided (quite a while ago, actually… shows how much I blog) to make Exclaim a monolithic kernel instead, as I couldn’t think of a decent way to implement IPC. Anyway, this screenshot is showing the new executable loading code (execve + fork) and the module loading code, as well as the new file system layer with KernelFS and DeviceFS.

… that no matter how hard you try, you’re destined to not do something? So, last night, I wasn’t feeling particularly brilliant. I decided to watch a film and go to bed early. Got the DVD, put it in, and tried to play it. *Erk*. My custom kernel didn’t have UDF support.

Of course, I didn’t really want to recompile my kernel, so I just took the “easy route” and booted Vista. But, alas, I hadn’t installed the software for my TV tuner card yet, so I couldn’t use the remote with it. So I attempted to install the software for it. “InstallShield error 0xblahblah. Installation failed.”. Gah. I tried again. This time the install worked, however, when I rebooted (like you have to do with Windows) after the install, and tried to use the remote… *boom*. BSOD. Just great. So I just had to live with the keyboard.

After that, I actually got the DVD playing, sat in bed, and started to watch it. And realised that the screen was too far away to see it. So, leaving my computer on, I pulled out my bookcase (which is fairly tall) so that I could put the monitor on top of it. Uh-oh. A little bit on the back of it caught on the extension cord that that my computer is connected to, and pulled it out the wall. Computer turns off. *GAH*. I proceeded to move it with the power off, got it all moved, booted it back up… Mouse stopped working. I gave up at that point.
